INSULINE: anabool hormoon bij uitstek, geproduceerd door de bètacellen van de alvleesklier. Met zijn werking vergemakkelijkt het de toegang tot de weefsels van glucose, aminozuren en bloedtriglyceriden.
Insuline stimuleert de leversynthese van glycogeen (glycogenosynthese) Wanneer deze reserves meer dan 5% van de totale levermassa bedragen, wordt de glycogeensynthese geblokkeerd en worden triglyceriden geactiveerd, geëxporteerd naar andere weefsels in de vorm van lipoproteïnen.
De werking van insuline op het lipidenmetabolisme is duidelijk anabool omdat het de synthese van opslagvetten bevordert en hun afgifte remt.
Insuline verhoogt ook de doorlaatbaarheid van cellen voor verschillende ionen zoals kalium, magnesium en fosfaat.
GLUCAGON: katabool hormoon geproduceerd door de alfacellen van de pancreas: bevordert de afgifte van glucose in de lever in de bloedsomloop, blokkeert glycogenosynthese en bevordert glycogenolyse; daarom heeft het een werking die in strijd is met die van insuline
SOMATOSTATINE: klasse van hormonen uit verschillende bronnen die de afgifte van insuline, cortisol, GH, prolactine, schildklierhormonen en glucagon remmen.
CATECOLAMINES (adrenaline, noradrenaline): geproduceerd door het bijniermerg als reactie op hypoglykemie met effecten van korte duur in vergelijking met de vorige. Ze versnellen het lichaamsmetabolisme door de lipolyse, glycogenolyse en gluconeogenese te verhogen. Ze hebben daarom een katabool effect.
GLUCOCORTICOIDEN: katabole hormonen geproduceerd door de bijnierschors: ze bevorderen de gluconeogenese als reactie op een lage bloedsuikerspiegel, versnellen de botdemineralisatie en bevorderen het eiwitkatabolisme.
