Ginkgo wordt beschouwd als een flavonoïde en adaptogeen medicijn, vooral met een geriatrische waarde. De bladeren van deze tweehuizige boom, voornamelijk gebruikt voor sierdoeleinden, zijn gedroogd en zijn rijk aan flavonoïden.Andere verwante verbindingen die bijdragen aan de kruidenexpressie van Ginkgo zijn de sesquiterpenen met alcoholische functies.
Ginkgo biloba bladeren
De bladeren die gebruikt worden zijn vaak die van de gecultiveerde mannelijke Ginkgo plant; de vrouwelijke exemplaren daarentegen zijn ondergeschikt, omdat ze worden benadeeld door het nadeel dat ze zaden hebben die rijk zijn aan boterzuur, een vetzuur met een korte keten, dus vluchtig, dat een slechte geur afgeeft in de omgeving. De bladeren worden gekenmerkt door de waaiervorm en de typische gele kleur, die ontstaat zodra het aanwezige chlorofyl volledig is afgebroken, waardoor alleen de flavonoïden (flavus = geel) overblijven.
Ginkgo wordt geriatrisch adaptogeen genoemd, omdat de producten die op basis van dit medicijn zijn samengesteld meestal worden aanbevolen voor ouderen met geheugenproblemen; Ginkgo, in feite, met zijn flavonoïden, verbetert de cerebrale circulatie. Het is daarom geen toeval dat Ginkgo een medicijn is dat in staat is de cerebrale microcirculatie te verbeteren, waardoor de intensiteit van celdood, die de hoge leeftijd van mensen sterk kenmerkt, wordt verminderd. Naast zijn adaptogene eigenschappen, heeft Ginkgo ook een "antitrombotische werking, dat wil zeggen anti-bloedplaatjesaggregatie; daarom vermindert het de vorming van microtrombi, die necrose van hersencellen bevordert (tegenwoordig een zeer frequente pathologie bij ouderen).
